Limestone History
The first limestone quarry in Indiana opened in Stinesville, Indiana in 1827. Since those early days Indiana is internationally known as the Limestone capital of the world. Limestone from Indiana quarries has graced many building throughout the world. Indiana limestone has a variety of color hues and shades from gray, buff and variegated that only improve in beauty as they age.
With the increase in demand for the limestone, fabrication shops opened in numerous towns and cities throughout Indiana. One of the most famous fabrication projects was the limestone for the Biltmore estate in Asheville, North Carolina. That quarry is still operational today.
Other building of note that have Indiana limestone in their architecture are: the Empire State Building, the Tribune Towers, Indiana Statehouse, Chicago City Hall, The Pentagon and the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.< FONT>
